Critical Thought's Voice in Washington

Seth Cohen is an Associate Professor at UCSD and gave a great talk recently titled "View from the Top: The Intersection of Science and Policy in the Capital". You can get more information here, including audio and video of the talk. I attended and it's definitely worth your time.

The most sobering part of the talk is the realization that organizations which represent critical thinking (not necessarily just science) are, unsurprisingly, badly outnumbered in government by legions of professional rhetoricians. Dr. Cohen was the OSTP (Office of Science and Technology Policy) which advises the President on scientific matters. The most valuable take-away is that this talk will give you a sense of the concrete realities and channels in the U.S. of how scientific issues affect political decision-making.
