The New Greatest Thing That Ever Happened: Evangelicals vs. Mormons

There's an argument that no one, including atheists, should be glad when religions go en masse for each others' throats. That's true enough when said religions, are in the conflict under discussion, armed with nuclear weapons. But in internal politics, it's what's called "awesome", or also, "divide and conquer". To wit: in the 2008 election, the best predictor I could find of which counties voted how much for John McCain was not race, not income, not population density, but a combined index of Mormonness+Evangelicalness. For more on this, see this little tidbit about how Glenn Beck's Mormonism is starting to alienate evangelicals and Baptists and charismatics and Pentecostals and basically all the fundamentalist non-Mormon Christians in the U.S.

It's also useful to remind non-Mormon fundamentalists how the LDS church has used local police to forcibly remove Christians from the area around the main Temple in Salt Lake City when these Christians show up exercising their free speech rights.

All of which adds up to TOTALLY NICE.
