Here's a great Spectator article about some trouble he had at Corfu in Greece. "It seems clear that crew members who messed up were subjected to ‘overboarding’: made to walk the plank. Sometimes they were blindfolded. It would have entailed a drop of 30 or 40 feet. And the Ionian sea can get pretty cold in winter. ‘Of course, the overboard ceremonies had quite a negative impact on our PR programme.’"
Recall that Hubbard was thrown out of the U.S. Navy for opening fire on the Coronado Islands just off the coast of San Diego, and you start to think maybe this guy had some issues. The Master (2012 movie roughly based on him) might have just scratched the surface!
