The Survey Has Exploded! Thanks Hemant

The Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta has helped out the cause by posting the formerly-religious survey. Have you taken it yet? Thanks Hemant!

And welcome, Hemant's readers, especially if you're in SoCal - come out and meet us at the San Diego New Atheists event

Q31 has no option for widowed, leaving no correct option for those who are.

Your survey responses are a bit confining. For example, not everyone's parents are still alive. This does not fall into 'separate.'

Good survey. One suggestion: in the language list, there are no signed languages listed. It would be good to have an option for at least American Sign Language (ASL).

Thanks to everyone for taking the survey and furthermore, taking the time to tell me how to improve it. I can't fix it as it is because then I would lose data, but future incarnations will certainly incorporate your suggestions. Really appreciate it!

Great survey! I learned about it through Hemant. I'd love to meet you guys, but I live in central Iowa. There's a lot of pressure to be religious where I live, and it's good to know I'm not alone.

The question regarding your degree program does not have enough options. For example, my field is wildlife biology, which is certainly not a "bench" science like biology. It is fully applied, with foundations in ecology and conservation biology (which have firm roots in evolution in order to direct applied, on-the-ground conservation efforts to preserve evolutionary processes into perpetuity). Very different from "bench" biology. I don't spend any time behind a bench with test tubes. Perhaps having an "other" field would help here?

You do need to test your survey before putting it out there. At least have someone proof-read it. Your question about parental educational level has "She" in the high-school dropout section when no other options are gendered. "She did not finish high school." AYKM? You need to edit that; editing will not mean you lose data. (I know you're not trying to make atheism unfriendly to women, but please do try not to, too!)

For any future surveys, consider adding educational options for "home-schooled." You probably also want to put in text boxes, and run it through a test sample. At the very least allow "Other" with a short text box. Yes, that process will be time-consuming but analyzing incomplete, misleading data is pointless. I know many people have tried to take this survey and given up halfway through because none of the options fit their experience.

Thanks again for continuing suggestions. I did beta-test the survey. You'll be hearing from me again, and in the meantime I suggest you sign up for the Facebook group so when I release another, you can be sure your suggestions are incorporated.

What time frame are you looking at to post the results from the survey? I help run Center for Inquiry–Michigan - so i'm curious to see your findings, though I don't follow blogosphere very regularly.

I'll be closing it tonight or tomorrow night. We already hit 5,000 so if people want to take it and haven't yet, now's the time.

Where can we see the results of this survey?

Soon! Have been either taking board exams or doing away rotations basically since I put it up, but I'll let everyone know!
